Educational activities

The campaign includes a series of educational initiatives to combat harmful drinking. It also aims at promoting responsible drinking in the Asia-Pacific region, including a new website on responsible drinking in the Asia-Pacific region.
>Although significant progress has been made in reducing harmful alcohol consumption, challenges remain in the region, particularly in relation to binge drinking. To address these, APISWA’s Moderation Week calls for targeted initiatives and better consumer education. It calls for :

  • The introduction of a legal purchase age (LPA) on all markets. The report recommends setting the legal purchase age at 18, in line with regional standards.
  • The definition of a ‘standard drink’ and the development of ‘national alcohol consumption guidelines. Many APAC markets do not have clear guidelines, exacerbating consumer confusion about responsible drinking.
  • Specific actions to combat illegal alcohol sales by streamlining taxation, improving enforcement and supporting compliant local businesses.

During Moderation Week, APISWA and its partners presented educational content aimed at enabling consumers to make informed and responsible choices when it comes to alcohol consumption.

20% reduction in harmful alcohol consumption by 2030

Social networking campaign

A new social networking campaign, entitled ‘Too Much of a Good Thing’, is also being launched this week. It is presented by influential personalities from Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. The series of videos aims to promote informed consumer choices in line with balanced lifestyles. As part of this initiative, the new Responsible Drinking APAC website and Facebook page will provide scientific information on the health effects of alcohol, standard beverage measurements and tips for responsible drinking. They also offer self-assessment tools, country-specific guidelines and professional support resources.
Tim Wallwork, President of APISWA, said:

“Harmful alcohol consumption remains a significant public health problem, and the industry has a significant role to play in a partnership approach to harm reduction. Moderation Week is a testament to the power of partnership and aims to bring together governments, civil society and the private sector to bring about meaningful change. Together, we can foster a culture of moderation, empower consumers to make informed choices and work towards the WHO target of a 20% reduction in harmful alcohol consumption by 2030.”

As part of this partnership, a memorandum of understanding has also been signed between APISWA and the China Alcoholic Beverages Association (CADA) to promote the alcohol and health agenda in China.
