Guest: Sofia, a Franco-Ukrainian student, discovers the delights of living Khmer cuisine at Malis restaurant

Sofiia Chaban is a Franco-Ukrainian student who spent a week as a trainee at Thalias. She then had the incredible opportunity to sample different menus from Thalias’ outlets, and she ended her experience with the amazing business lunch at Malis. According to the student, it was a culinary experience she’ll never forget.

It’s the first time I’ve tasted Khmer cuisine, and I was blown away! I’d tasted Khmer food before, but only in a few of Phnom Penh’s small local restaurants and street food stalls. The setting of the Malis restaurant is absolutely beautiful, like being in nature itself, and there’s even this wonderful fishpond. So, it really is a splendid setting – I was so pleasantly surprised!

I absolutely love the vintage and traditional setting, which adds so much charm. The burgundy, brown and green colour scheme is stunning. The staff are incredibly professional, always smiling, friendly and attentive. I’m a big fan of the Takeo sausages on the business menu, they’re well cooked and presented. The chicken and lemongrass soup was also a winner, with a taste and mix of slightly acid flavours that reminded me a little of a Ukrainian dish. All in all, the menu was quite hearty and well-balanced, with some tasty vegetables that I hadn’t tried before, and some desserts that I’d never tried before, in particular these delicious coconut balls.

The whole experience was just fantastic, from the lovely setting to the warm and friendly staff and the delicious food. I’m going to tell my parents about this amazing place and bring them to try it for themselves soon!
