Emperor Claudius II, believing that single men made better soldiers, outlawed marriage for young men. But a priest named Valentinus saw the cruelty in this law. He believed that love was meant to be celebrated, not forbidden.
Defying the emperor’s orders, Valentinus secretly performed weddings for couples in love, uniting them in the sacred bond of marriage. But his defiance did not go unnoticed. When his actions were discovered, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death.
While in prison, legend has it that Valentinus befriended the jailer’s daughter, who often visited him.
